Moab
Yesterday, I traveled from Jerome Idaho, to Scipio Ut. It was mostly sunny, but a long endless freeway through mostly open dessert and not much to see, unfortunately. It started to get interesting after the Utah border, when a mountain range came into view, with snow-capped mountains, which lasted down past Ogden and Salt Lake City, but then petered out again to barren desert. Very busy through the Ogden - Salt Lk corridor and a lot of const. to make things worse! At on point, there were 7 lanes of traffic, and everyone with the pedal to the metal! I took my time to avoid any stress. Quite relieved to get out in the country again, but it took about an hour to do so, at 70 MPH. Very large city-bigger than I expected. I didn't stop- would have been too much hassle getting off and on the freeway; plus too many Mormons around there for my liking. They pretty much seem to run the whole city. Numerous religious stations on the radio. The speed limit there was still 80 MPH, so people were flying by me, even though I was doing 75 MPH. But, at $2.40/gal (Amer), that's less than 1/2 of what we pay at home for gas, so, in effect you're getting more than twice the gas mileage, even at that speed. so, in that regard, even though we're losing 30 cents on the dollar, we're still well ahead here. Food is less too, by about 1/3. Rooms are about the same. I can only do 5-6 hrs/day of driving. Am pretty exhausted after that.
Today I will only drive 3 hrs, as I'm going to stop at Moab, where there is supposed to be some pretty awesome rock formations, so I'll hopefully be able to get out and do a bit of hiking. Finally, something to look at! I should have some pics up by then. So far, it's all been flat, and/or raining. My favorite area to date was the Columbia River Gorge in Wash. state, but was raining very hard there. At least it's bone-dry here, and 27 degrees yesterday. It's about 4200' elevation here.
On to Moab!
